Chapter 7

After taking the longest shower he’d ever had, Rhett tucked Mac into his bed. He held Mac close to him, taken aback when Mac snuggled close, until his ass was right at Rhett’s dick. Rhett’s experience with sex had always been fast and dirty. This cuddling afterward, he could get used to, especially from his mate.

Mate. Hard to believe Mac had been the one to offer his neck to him without reserve. Rhett thought it would take more time to convince Mac they were meant to be, but he didn’t regret biting Mac one bit. The more important question was, if morning arrived, would Mac suddenly wake up and realize he’d made a mistake?

There was Bert, Barry, hell, the entire Silver River pack to consider. Rhett had a score to settle with his old pack, and couldn’t tolerate leaving things like this, a stalemate, anymore. It wasn’t just Mac they’d hurt, but a few weeks ago, Rigger, a rogue dominant wolf from Silver River, threatened the lives of Rem and Cam.

His brothers didn’t go after the entire pack simply because fighting the whole pack was suicide and they had plenty of reasons to live. Their mates. Rhett didn’t understand that, until he mated Mac. He nuzzled Mac’s neck and licked at the healing bite mark on his skin. In time, only two neat little holes would remain, but any shifter with sense would know Mac was mated. His. No one tangled with his mate or him without facing the consequences.

“Rhett? Are you still awake? Go to sleep,” Mac said in a sleepy voice.

Seconds later, Mac started to snore. Snore cutely, too, Rhett decided. He was content to hold Mac like this, to watch his little mate sleep. Part of him still couldn’t believe what went on tonight. Certainly life changing. It was one decision that would probably bring a whole boatload of problems, but then again, when were things ever easy?

Some things, some people, Rhett decided, were certainly worth fighting for. Sensing a familiar presence by his door, he let out a soft snarl and regretted it immediately. Mac mumbled something in his sleep.

“Rhett, you should wear a shirt, or you’ll distract me all day,” Mac murmured.

He grinned. Did Mac talk in his sleep often? The scratch of paws on his door reminded him he had an uninvited guest. Yelling at his brother to go the fuck away might only wake up Mac. Rhett carefully untangled himself from Mac. He didn’t owe his brothers an explanation except they were involved in this mess, too.

The Silver River pack had been finding ways to get back at them. Mating Mac was a good reason to declare war. He put on a pair of boxers and opened the door. Cord sat on his porch in wolf form. Under the moonlight, the scars across his muzzle and neck looked like thick, white threads. Guilt wormed its way into Rhett’s heart.

He’d been partially responsible for those scars.

After being booted from the pack, he’d been enraged, pissed.
